Hello Dan! I accept your challenge, and have one for you! In your videos, I see that your chickens are in your garden. Could you make a video about how you make that work? My chickens want to eat EVERYTHING I plant. You seem to have harmony in your garden with your chickens. How did you make that happen? Is it the type of plants in a particular area? Are your chickens fenced off from other types of plants? Any info on this would be great! I can see the benefit of chickens in the garden: scratching, depositing fertilizer, eating bugs. How do you do it? Thanks! Even a reply here would be great. I appreciate your channel very much!
Love it Dan! how much of one persons food bill do you think you could substitute with a food forest around your size? id like to know how to start planning the needed size and layout of my own food forest 😀 thanks so much and God bless!
In like Flynn. I weigh every bit of harvest and record it a garden ledger. I can then easily convert it to grocery store prices and see the resulting savings. Thanks for the challenge!
Yes!!! I live almost 50 miles from the nearest big grocery store, so my trips to town are infrequent. I love being able to go to the garden and see what I will be eating today. My breakfast this morning was a handful of radish thinnings, yum.
Great video – I get my first seed catalogs in November and start dreaming then. I've already started 9 baby lemon trees from seed, and will be starting more peach seeds. Also just planted goji berry seeds and will be ordering more strawberry seeds – nobody tells you they are as easy as tomatoes. I am planning for more edible perennials for the back yard and now that 1 tree is gone from the front I may put tubs of squash out there as well. The cardoons and Jerusalem artichokes are ready to harvest. Also lots of wildflower mixes for the bees & butterflies. Gonna be a busy season! Thanks for the enthusiastic message!
Excellent – I'm in. Today was indoor planting Milwaukee, WI (z5b ~near lake) some of the seeds/cuttings I've gotten from a grower, seed-saver in PA (z5 ~near lake) who sells on ebay. I need to get into the new habits of tending my eventual sprouts and mastering those plant-cube [dice] and spent some leftover plastic party cups to begin herbs, berries, and other mostly-perennials I hope to plant here and there. Last year's Red Currant Spoon Tomatoes [trained over the front fence] were so stunningly delicious that I saved seeds, telling my neighbors that I would try to provide free seedlings next spring. My plan is to get that tending habit established before playing with those dice-sized cubes. Wish me luck, focus, persistence, and a good sense of loving absurdity-humor!
This challenge is definitely for us. Only this year during the season (only for about 6-8 months though)were aiming for 60%. Last year we had about 30% (lunches). Homegrown and seasonal will always be better. And of course we have fava beans to add this year thanks to you!
10% would be easy. Corn, string beans, peas, potatoes, and tomatoes. Anything else would raise the percentage. But better have a nice large freezer, if you don't know how to can. Will send photos!
Challenge accepted! I eat mostly vegetables, and I think I knocked thousands off my grocery bill last year with fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs, and also by preserving a good part of the harvest using various methods. First year I had a garden and I was amazed at all I could grow.
Okay, but I'll add to the challenge. How about growing enough to give some fresh produce to someone less fortunate (elderly, out of work, sick etc.). Or to add to the challenge how about starting some seeds and donating the plants to someone that would like to start a garden. Oh gosh, almost forgot, how about making a raised bed for a local nursing home and planting it. We can really make the world a better place!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A great challenge! I've been planning for a new garden this year because I need to eat more veggies. So I'll use your challenge to help push me forward.
Building my first perma-garden, and I accept that challenge! Alberta!
Very good challenge thank you ?
Done!!!!
Challenge accepted! Just started 6 Bok Choy and 6 Cabbage on my heated seed table 🙂
I also accept. Will your wife ever share her recipes on what y'all grow?

Container garden if you're short of space. I grow a lot of good stuff in pots.
